Qualitative vs. Quantitative Research: Which One Fits Your Thesis?

One of the first decisions you make is your research approach. But how do you know whether to use qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods?

Qualitative:

  • Used for exploring experiences, perceptions
  • Data from interviews, focus groups
  • Thematic analysis

Quantitative:

  • Used for testing hypotheses and statistical relationships
  • Data from surveys, experiments
  • SPSS, R, or Excel used for analysis

Mixed Methods:

  • Combines depth (qualitative) with breadth (quantitative)
  • Sequential or concurrent design.
